Prof. Birger Horstmann leads the group “Theory of Electrochemical Materials” at the Institute of Technical Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Centre. He is driving forward both conventional battery simulations and the application of quantum computers in battery research. The modelling of zinc-based batteries, e.g. zinc-air, zinc-ion, zinc-nickel, is one of his key research topics. After studying physics and mathematics in Jena and Cambridge, he completed his doctorate at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics. He was appointed professor at the University of Ulm and PI at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm in 2023.
